Tiger

Tiger, a 5 month old, male, collie mix, is looking for a loving home, where he will be cuddled and warm, especially warm.

Tiger was originally purchased by a family who forced him to live outside, even in this past month's below freezing temperatures. A concerned landlord gave his family one night to bring him inside after witnessing Tiger shivering in single digit temperatures overnight. When his owner refused to keep an indoor dog, the landlord insisted that Tiger be surrendered to The Shepherd's Flock Sanctuary. Thank goodness for the landlord's conviction because Tiger surely would have frozen to death. He has shivered away almost all his body weight over the past few weeks. Tiger is quite underweight for his breeding.

Despite a tough start in life, Tiger is an incredibly sweet, and happy go lucky puppy. He is very gentle, especially with small children, and has not displayed any typical, destructive puppy behaviors. He is calm and simply happy to have some companionship, a cuddle and a strong chew toy.

Tiger has quickly picked up on house training and has crate trained very quickly. He is learning basic commands and as is evident by his constant eye contact, he is clearly eager to please.

Tiger is looking for a home where he will be treated like one of the family and will be patiently and safely "shown the ropes," as he grows up. Most importantly, he never wants to spend another night alone in the cold.

Tiger is truly an exceptional puppy and will be a very loving and loyal companion.

Exciting Update!

When we encounter a dog like Camilla, we are filled with a range of emotions.  During her first days at the sanctuary, we watched her sleep soundly for probably the first time in months. We watched her skinny body take in a nutritious meal, albeit watered down so that she could lap it up despite her golf ball size oral tumor. We also saw her race around in circles in a yard where she knew she was safe and could be carefree. We feel a sense of relief that we "got" her, saved her from uncertain death or really, in her case, starvation on the streets. Truthfully, we also ponder what has happened to humanity, that people could abandon a precious creature like Camilla's, out on the street to starve to death in the middle of winter.

We also feel a sense of hope knowing that veterinary science has reached amazing heights. Many illnesses that were death sentences only a few years ago are now treatable and curable. We know that with the help of incredible animal advocates, including Dr. Doug Tack and his staff at Black River Animal Hospital and Dr. Siobhan Haney and her staff at the radiation oncology unit of Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, there can be answers and solutions.

We also are met with a grave sense of worry, as we consider the reality of cost. The truth is that we make blind promises to the animals in our care that everything is going to be okay and that they will be safe now. How we are going to keep these promises is often unknown.

Thanks to the incredibly generous donations and concerns of dear old friends and so many wonderful new friends of the sanctuary, we were able to keep our promise to Camilla. She has completed a full course of radiation and received major oral surgery. Her tumor is shrinking and revealing healthy, pink tissue. She has gained over 10 pounds and is well on her way to complete health.  Her treatment was successful and her oncologist does not expect a relapse. Of course, as a resident of the sanctuary, Cammie will continue to receive periodic check-ups and a carefully prepared diet to accommodate her new, less toothy smile!

To all who have donated to Cammie's cause and to all who have wished her well, thank you! Thank you so very much! We would like to offer a special thanks to Pets, Pets, Pets of Califon, NJ for providing Cammie with a special raw food diet during her treatment. One of the blessings of the animal welfare field is that despite seeing such raw evil and the horrors that humans are capable of inflicting upon the innocent, we can also experience, first hand, the very best in so many people.

Winter 2010

A few weeks ago, Cammie was found curled up in a snowbank. Skinny and dehydrated, it was clear that she had been stray for a while and seemed to be surviving by eating snow. Sadly, Cammie's story gets only more depressing.

In addition to having been homeless, Cammie is suffering from a large, rapidly growing tumor on her jaw. Vivacious and very well behaved, we can only imagine that Cammie was abandoned, "thrown out," due to the way her tumor has disfigured her face or because her owners were unwilling to pay for her treatment.

Left untreated, Cammie's tumor will grow so large that she will no longer be able to eat. Fending for herself, she would have starved to death. For those of us who know her enthusiasm for life, this is an extremely disturbing thought.

Cammie has had a full veterinary evaluation. With exception to the tumor, she is a healthy and joyful soul. Our veterinarians believe that radiation treatment will significantly shrink the tumor, allowing Cammie to live out her senior years in comfort.

Please, please become a member of "Team Camilla," by making a tax deductible donation to help pay for Cammie's radiation treatment. Simply put, without your donation, we will not be able to save Cammie's life.

Visit our "Donate" page to make a secure donation. Truly, you will be saving a life!

I am Tiger. I am a collie mix puppy and looking for a loving home!
Me again, Tiger. This is me with my new chew toy, on my soft bed. I just came in from my lesson, so I still have my leash on.

Camilla - A few days after her rescue.
Heading out to RBVH! One step closer to the rest of her life!
"Auntie" Lauren, one of Cammie's radiation techs. at RBVH after session 1 of radiation treatment. Cammie actually loved going to RBVH each day!
Beautiful Cammie after Radiation and Oral Surgery! 10 pounds heavier with healthy, pink gum tissue and a new smile! The tumor shrunk in width and length, and is even receeding to one side. It protrudes less allowing her to close her mouth. She even has a front tooth peeking through - not visible prior to radiation!
Thank you so much! On my way to a whole new life! Love, Cammie

Congratulations to Otis! Otis has found a wonderful new home. In addition to a loving family, Otis has several animal companions!
